Missouri minimum wage overview
Missouri voters passed Proposition B in 2018 establishing annual minimum wage increases. Missouri's minimum wage adjusts annually. St. Louis previously had a higher local rate but Missouri preemption law struck it down.
Missouri preempts local minimum wage ordinances - cities and counties cannot set minimum wages higher than the state rate. This law overturned a $10 per hour minimum wage that St. Louis had enacted. Missouri's minimum wage is indexed to 85% of the federal Consumer Price Index.
Governing law
Missouri minimum wage is governed by Missouri Revised Statutes Section 290.502 (Mo. Rev. Stat. § 290.502). This statute establishes the minimum hourly wage that Missouri employers must pay covered employees.
The official authority for minimum wage enforcement in Missouri is the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. For official rate verification or to report a minimum wage violation, contact the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations directly.
What if my employer pays less than minimum wage?
If your employer is paying you less than the Missouri minimum wage of $13.75 per hour, you have the right to file a wage claim with the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. You may be entitled to recover back wages plus penalties. Most states allow you to recover unpaid wages going back 2-3 years. You can also file a complaint with the federal U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division which enforces the federal minimum wage under the FLSA.
