Official rates sourced from the Indiana Department of Labor
Indiana minimum wage overview
Indiana's minimum wage matches the federal rate and applies to most employers. Indiana applies a tip credit allowing tipped employees to be paid less than minimum wage provided tips make up the difference.
Indiana prohibits local governments from enacting minimum wage ordinances higher than the state rate. Indiana has not increased its minimum wage above the federal level since the federal increase to $7.25 in 2009.
Governing law
Indiana minimum wage is governed by Indiana Code IC 22-2-2-4 (Ind. Code § 22-2-2-4). This statute establishes the minimum hourly wage that Indiana employers must pay covered employees.
The official authority for minimum wage enforcement in Indiana is the Indiana Department of Labor. For official rate verification or to report a minimum wage violation, contact the Indiana Department of Labor directly.
What if my employer pays less than minimum wage?
If your employer is paying you less than the Indiana minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, you have the right to file a wage claim with the Indiana Department of Labor. You may be entitled to recover back wages plus penalties. Most states allow you to recover unpaid wages going back 2-3 years. You can also file a complaint with the federal U.S. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division which enforces the federal minimum wage under the FLSA.
