Federal FMLA protections plus Washington-specific paid leave information
Washington leave law overview
Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave provides up to 12 weeks of family leave and up to 12 weeks of medical leave, with a combined maximum of 16-18 weeks. Washington provides one of the more generous paid leave programs nationally.
Washington workers who need both family and medical leave in the same year can receive up to 16 weeks combined (18 weeks for pregnancy-related conditions). Washington's benefit rate uses a sliding scale providing up to 90% replacement for lower-wage workers.
Federal FMLA in Washington
All Washington workers at employers with 50 or more employees within 75 miles are also covered by the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (29 U.S.C. 2601). Federal FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for a qualifying serious health condition, to care for a family member, or to bond with a new child. You must have worked for your employer for at least 12 months and at least 1,250 hours in the past year to be eligible.
